The US Ministry of Homeland Security said Harvard University will lose his ability to sign up for foreign students if it does not meet the claim of the Trump administration to share information about some visa holders, which marks the government’s recent escalation against the educational institution.
The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also announced on Wednesday the termination of two DHS grants totaling more than $ 2.7 million to Harvard.
Noem said she wrote a letter to Harvard and demanded items about what she called the “illegal and violent activities” of Harvard’s foreign students visa holders by April 30.
“And if Harvard cannot verify that it is in full compliance with its reporting requirements, the university will lose the privilege of enrolling foreign students,” Noem said in a statement.
A spokesman for Harvard said the university was aware of Noem’s letter “regarding the attachment of grants and control of foreign students Visa.”
The spokesman said the university stood by his statement earlier this week so as not to surrender his independence or waive his constitutional rights, “while saying it will comply with the law.
President Donald Trump’s administration has threatened universities with federal financing cuts over pro-Palestinian campus protests.
Authorities are also trying to deport some foreign protesters and have recalled hundreds of visas across the country.
“With a endowment of $ 53.2 billion, Harvard can fund his own chaos-dhs,” Noem said, adding an “anti-American, Pro-Hama’s ideology” existed on Harvard.
Harvard has previously said it worked to fight anti -Semitism and other prejudice on his campus while retaining academic freedoms and the right to protest.
Trump’s crash
The Trump administration said late last month that it underwent $ 9 billion in federal contracts and grants to Harvard and later called for restrictions – including a mask ban and removal of diversity, justice and inclusion programs – to be introduced to the university to continue to receive federal money.
On Monday, Harvard rejected several demands that it said would waive control to the government. The Trump administration subsequently said it was freezing $ 2.3 billion in funding.
Trump also threatened Tuesday to strip Harvard of his tax -exempt status. Cnn Reported Wednesday that the US internal income service made plans to cancel the tax -exempt status of Harvard and that a final decision was soon expected.
Harvard said there was no legal basis for canceling his tax -exempt status and saying that such an action would be unprecedented, would reduce his financial support for students and would lead to some critical medical research programs.
Human Rights Advocates has raised free expression and academic freedom concerns about the crash of the government.
The Trump administration has also frozen or canceled some financing for universities such as Columbia, Princeton, Brown, Cornell and Northwestern.
It has also threatened to withhold funding in relation to cultural war issues such as diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs and transient policies.
