US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday the introduction of mutual tariffs in several countries, including a 29% duty on Pakistani goods.
Trump defended the decision and said it was necessary to correct prolonged trade imbalance and what he regarded as unreasonable treatment of US products in foreign markets.
He has long agreed to reshape international trade agreements and claim that high tariffs imposed by other countries have unfairly subsidized their economies at the expense of the United States.
Trump explained that Pakistan has charged the United States a 58% duty on US goods, causing the United States to impose a 29% duty on Pakistani products.
The United States remains one of Pakistan’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade valuable to $ 7.3 billion by 2024. US exports to Pakistan rose by 4.4% to $ 2.1 billion, while Pakistan’s imports rose by 4.9%, a total of $ 5.1 billion.
Trump criticized the practice of subsidizing foreign economies and said the United States had long helped other nations and called on countries to be more self -reliant.
The United States has also imposed mutual tariffs on 40 other countries with rates from 10% to 50% as part of a broader effort to tackle global trade imbalances.
The new tariffs announced by President Donald Trump are aimed at countries that have charged high tariffs on US goods, with the aim of ensuring more fair trade conditions for US industries.
