Washington: US President Donald Trump has dismissed British Prime Minister Keir Stormers’ call for major US military support for Ukraine, instead insisting that a mineral is dealing with Kiev is the key to securing its security against Russia.
Stormmer, who met Trump in the White House for the first time since the American leader started his second period, turned on the charm and said that peace in Ukraine had only become possible because of Trump.
In the Oval Office, Stormmer Stormmer handed over an invitation from King Charles for a state visit. Trump accepted. A date is not set.
But underlying differences between the Allies remained on the table for the private conversation that followed. They include transatlantic frictions over US-Russia talks aimed at ending the Ukraine War.
Before the meeting, Stormer had claimed that there could be no long-term peace in Ukraine without regular US security guarantees-a argument Trump all laid off.
“We are a backstop because we want to be over there we are working,” as a result of the economic partnership, Trump said. “We want a lot of people over there.”
Stormmer is the latest European leader who met Trump after French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday joined the White House for a friendly meeting that nevertheless showed sharp differences about Russia’s war with Ukraine and the United States pushing after a quick ceasefire.
“It is moving pretty fast,” Trump said of a ceasefire diplomacy, expressing optimism that Russian President Vladimir Putin would hold his end of any occasion. “It will either be pretty soon or it won’t be at all.”
“We have to get it right,” Stormer said at a joint press conference with Trump. “It can’t be peace that rewards the aggressor.”
Shocking Allies
Trump, who joined the January 20, has shocked traditional US allies in Europe by getting closer to Putin, calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy a “dictator” and requires repayment for US financial support to Kiev. On Thursday, Trump distanced himself from the dictator commentary and said he will come with the Ukrainian leader.
Zelenskiy is expected to be in Washington on Friday to sign an agreement with Trump on rare Earth Minerals, an agreement, as the Ukrainian leader said would be related to further US help. Trump portrays the deal as a way of recovering US money that has been used to support Ukraine. It does not include any specific security guarantees for Ukraine.
Stormmer has signaled that Britain will increase defense spending and are expected to try to reassure the US president that Europe will provide support and security guarantees to Kiev if the peace talks with Russia are successful.
A senior official in the Trump administration told journalists that they were satisfied with Stormers’ promises to increase defense spending.
On Thursday, Putin warned “Western elites” against trying to sabotage a potential approximation between Russia and the United States, saying that Moscow would use its diplomats and intelligence services to ward off such an effort. The comments were a apparent reference to the European Union and the UK.
Trump has crushed foreign policy and domestic political norms since the beginning of his second period, rattling allies by advocating the US ownership of the Gaza Strip and by promising trade -rares on both friends and enemies.
Trump said the United States would reach a trade agreement with Britain “very soon”, hours after one of his helpers told journalists that they sought a “financial relationship with the United Kingdom, which should be based on mutual and equal trade.”
In the Oval Office, Trump complained about trade relations with the European Union, which Britain left in 2020.
“Of course, on our trade it is fair and balanced,” storms interacted, “and actually you have little profits, so we are in a different position.” The United States has a trade surplus in goods with Britain, according to US government statistics.
Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance, who also attended the meeting, said the leaders would discuss what he described as “violations of freedom of expression” in the UK, which has affected US technology companies.
“We have had freedom of speech for a very, very long time in the UK,” replied Stormmer.
Friendly relationships
Trump’s relationship with storms started a friendly start in September with a two-hour dinner in New York in the Trump Tower. The British leader’s team said the atmosphere was hot with a “gracious host.”
Like Macron, Stormer will argue that a hasty peace agreement with Russia without the participation of Ukraine or European nations could lead to further instability in Europe, which would not be good for the United States.
Stormer has said he is open to British troops who provide security guarantees to Ukraine, but only with other European nations and with “the right conditions in place.”
European countries are concerned about the high level of conflict in Ukraine now, the US official said, while a ceasefire would give them more comfort that their role is more about peacekeeping than deterring active conflict.
“That type of power depends a lot on the political settlement that has been done to end the war,” the US official said. “This trade -off is part of what the leaders will discuss today.”
