Washington: President Donald Trump has revealed a huge new defense project called Golden Dome Missile Defense Shield.
The project costs $ 175 billion and is designed to protect the United States from missile attacks using satellites in space. Trump says the system will help protect itself from threats from countries such as China and Russia.
Trump announced on Tuesday that he had chosen a design for missile defense screen and appointed a space force General to lead the efforts to build the ambitious defense program aimed at blocking threats.
At a press conference in the White House, Trump announced that US room force – General Michael Guetlein would be the leading program leader of what the president said would be a project of $ 175 billion – an effort that is largely considered Keystone for Trump’s military planning.
The Golden Dome will “protect our homeland,” Trump said from the Oval Office, adding that Canada had said it would be part of it.
The first ordered of Trump in January, the Golden Dome aims to create a network of satellites to discover, trace and potentially intercept incoming missiles. The shield could insert hundreds of satellites for missile detection and tracking.
At a cost of $ 175 billion, it will take years to implement as the controversial program faces both political control and financing uncertainty.
Democratic lawmakers have expressed concern about the procurement process and involvement of Trump Ally Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which has emerged as a Frontrunner with Palantir and Anduril to build key components of the system.
The golden dome was inspired by Israel’s land -based iron dome defense shield that protects it from missiles and rockets. Trump’s Golden Dome is much more extensive and includes a massive series of surveillance satellites and a separate fleet of attacking satellites that would shoot offensive missiles shortly after lifting.
Tuesday’s message starts Pentagon’s efforts to test and ultimately buy missiles, systems, sensors and satellites that make up the Golden Dome.
