President Donald Trump signs an executive order Monday that removes US sanctions against Syria, the White House said, adding that some sanctions against former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and other individuals will remain in place.
Sanctions would remain at Assad’s associates, alleged human rights violations, drug dealers, people attached to chemical weapons activities, and spokeswoman for Daish, the White House told Karoline Leavitt journalists in an orientation.
In May, Trump announced that he would lift sanctions against Syria as part of measures to help the country rebuild after a devastating civil war.
“He is obliged to support a Syria that is stable, united and in peace with himself and its neighbors,” Leavitt said, noticing Trump’s meeting with Syria’s new President Ahmed Al-Sharaa during his recent journey to the Middle East.
“This is another promise that was made and promise that this president held to promote peace and stability in the region,” she added.
