- Trump’s remarks follow the meeting between the US envoy and Iran officials.
- Both sides described Saturday’s conversations as “positive”, “constructive.”
- The US president says Iran “pretty close” of building a nuclear weapon.
President Donald Trump has warned Iran to waive any persecution of nuclear weapons or risk to a potential military strike on his nuclear infrastructure, Reuters reported.
In a speech with journalists on Monday, Trump claimed that Iran deliberately stopped progress with nuclear negotiations with the United States. “I think they are tapping us,” he said after a recent meeting in Oman between the American special envoy Steve Witkoff and a senior Iranian official.
Both sides described Saturday’s conversations as “positive” and “constructive.” Another round is scheduled for the coming weekend, which is probably held in Rome, according to a source familiar with the planning.
The negotiations are said to be exploratory in nature, with discussions centered on outlining a broad framework for a potential deal. However, Trump made it clear that every deal must ensure that Iran abandons all nuclear weapons ambitions.
“Iran has to get rid of the concept of a nuclear weapon. They can’t have a nuclear weapon,” he said.
When asked whether US options include a military strike in Tehran’s nuclear places, Trump replied, “Of course, it does.”
He added that Iran was “pretty close” of building a nuclear weapon and urged rapid action to avoid serious consequences.
Indirect US -Iran negotiations took place under former President Joe Biden, but gave little progress.
The last formal deal – the international nuclear agreement in 2015 – was broken by President Barack Obama and later withdrawn from Trump during his first period.
