The Tulane football team got away with a dominant 23-3 win over Northwestern on Saturday, but Green Wave had a personal vendetta against their opponent.

The Green Wave undertook Wildcats at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans, one day after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, who made lands in the city, which forced Tulane to play her home matches in five stadiums throughout Louisiana and Alabama.

Tulane chose to wear green helmets, similar to those that the 2005 team was wearing, and that team also had white jerseys.

However, Northwestern, on the road, decided to go with the white tops of the season opener.

Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall said his team requested to wear white uniforms to commemorate the 2005 team, but they were denied (the home -day usually carries colors).

Sumrall said it was “motivation” for his team.

“It’s their power, but when you show respect for the city of New Orleans, that’s what will happen. You’re going to run into a team like this,” Sumrall told journalists after the game.

“They had a chip on their shoulder. I would wear the same exact uniform that the team wore 20 years ago. The request was denied – we might have used it as a little bit of motivation to represent the city. Not respect for New Orleans, ever.”

Superdome in New Orleans did not open until 2006 – New Orleans Saints also had to move.

Sumrall has been off and off with Tulane since 2012, when he first attended school and then as a co-defensive coordinator. He traveled after the 2014 season, but returned last year to become a head coach after previously manned Troy for two seasons.
