Turkish authorities arrested 234 people in an operation coordinated with four European countries against criminal drug trading organizations, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said Tuesday.
“We have withheld 234 high -level leaders of crime organizations, 225 from interior Turkey and nine from abroad,” said Yerlikaya, adding that 10 of the suspects were sought with interpol red messages.
When he spoke in Ankara, he said the detainees had been sought for crimes, including international drug trafficking, money laundering, murder, kidnapping, threats and extortion.
Police in Belgium, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Turkey performed coordinated operations, Yerlikaya said, adding that the prisoners were suspected of involvement in a scheme that produces and trade in cocaine, heroin and other drugs.
The operation seized hundreds of properties, vehicles, corporate sticks and bank accounts with a total of a total of 13 billion Lira ($ 341 million), he said.
Turkish police worked for eight months with the European Union Europol Agency to map and decipher the organization’s secrets, contacts and methods, he added.
