Two people were killed when firefighters tackling a flame were assaulted by an unknown number of gunmen in a running standoff in the northwestern American part of Idaho on Sunday, the local sheriff said.
It was not immediately clear whether there was a gunman or more, Sheriff Bob Norris told a press conference, adding that civilians may have been hit in the incident that unfolded in a nature area in Coeur d’Al.
“We are prepared to neutralize this suspect who is currently actively shooting at the staff with public security,” Norris said.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Christ’s Noem has been informed about the Idaho shooting, ABC News reported.
Firefighters received the first call from a fire around 1 p.m. 13:21 local time, said Norris, and approx. 40 minutes later, reported they were shot on.
“This is a disgusting direct attack on our brave firefighters,” said Idaho -Governor Brad Little on X. “I all ask Idahoans to pray for them and their families when we wait to learn more.”
Little did not give any further details of any loss or how the incident unfolded.
“As this situation is still developing, you need to be ready from the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to do their jobs,” added a little.
