Two motorcyclists beaten by police as threatening flooding forces road closure

Multan district authorities suspended traffic at the head Muhammad Wala Bridge on Tuesday in a precautionary measure against impending flood threat.

The water level in Sutlej, the Ravi and the Chenab rivers has reached dangerous heights after heavy monsoon rain over Punjab and India’s release of additional water in Pakistan’s eastern rivers.

Punjab’s Director -General of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Irfan Ali, said the next four to six hours are critical as India continues to release water.

According to the flood forecasting department, over 350,000 CUSCS WATER is currently passing through Ganda Singh Wala at Sutlej – the highest level registered since 1955 – while the water flow at Hovedtrimmu at Chenab has exceeded 516,000 CUSSCS.

Over the next 24 hours there is a risk of urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sahiwal, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Faisalabad and Bahawalpur.

PDMA Punjab has issued an extreme high -level warning for the chenab and sutlej rivers. Between September 4 and 5, a high-level flood situation is expected at Panjnad at the Chenab River.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of additional increases in the river pressure in the coming days and raises concerns about a potential “super flood” in Sindh.
