Underground cable project nearing completion

RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has completed approximately 80 percent of underground cabling and utility services in the historic Raja Bazaar and the newly developed Commercial Avenue Market.

Initial work on a major beautification project has also begun, with the Rs875 million scheme scheduled to be completed by May 30.

After completion, residents will be able to experience Raja Bazaar and the commercial market in a renewed and visually striking form in June this year, according to municipal authorities.

Officials say that in the commercial stretch of Raja Bazaar – from Fawara Chowk to Dingi Khoi Chowk, an area established before the creation of Pakistan – about 80 percent of the underground cables have already been completed. The next phase includes repair, restoration and facade improvement of old buildings, installation of single-color signs of uniform size, construction of tuff-tiled walkways, upgraded sidewalks, public toilets, benches, decorative lighting and placement of flower pots and green plants of various sizes.

These works have entered the initial implementation phase and are expected to be completed by 30 May, after which the area will be opened as a dedicated pedestrian street, similar to Saddar Bank Road.

Meanwhile, at the city’s busiest Commercial Avenue Market, nearly 90 percent of the underground cabling work and relocation of utilities has been completed. The municipal corporation has now also started the preliminary beautification work in this area.

Chief Officer Municipal Corporation Imran Ali said during Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s “Sohna Punjab” program that the completion of underground cabling and beautification projects in Raja Bazaar and commercial market in May has a unique significance.

He said the project would ensure improved cleanliness, improved aesthetics and a healthier urban environment for citizens.

Municipal Officer Infrastructure Rafaqat Gondal said that by June this year, Raja Bazaar and the commercial market will emerge as highly attractive destinations, encouraging citizens to prioritize shopping in these areas.
