UNHCR requires dialogue about Afghan refugees

Islamabad:

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Thursday called for a humanitarian approach to the issuance of Afghan refugees and emphasized to renew dialogue between Pakistan and Afghanistan to ensure a safe, voluntary and dignified return of individuals.

According to spokesman Qaiser Khan Afridi, UNHCR called for a constructive commitment between Pakistan and Afghanistan to facilitate voluntary, informed and worthy return, ensuring the sustainability of re -integration efforts in Afghanistan, where the human rights situation remained muted.

The organization recognized and praised Pakistan’s decades long tradition of hosting Afghan refugees, many of whom had fled conflict, persecution and instability since the late 1970s.

“The government and people in Pakistan have a commendable, decades -long history of hosting Afghans who fled from conflict and violence in the past,” noted Afridi.
