Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) officials suggested an increase in gas prices when they suggested that domestic gas prices may need to be increased if uninterrupted supply and a load of load load must be secured, Express News reported.
The comments were made during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee for Oil, where questions about low gas pressure and sustained power cuts were discussed in detail.
During the session, CEO of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) explained that the ongoing load crisis is largely driven by dependence on imported liquid natural gas (LNG).
He said that only 45% of the country’s gas needs are currently being met through domestic production, while the remaining 55% are fulfilled through imports.
There is currently effort to restore the supply in Lahore, MD said, adding that complaints raised by Senator Kamil Ali Agha would be dealt with on a personal basis.
The committee was informed that in the Ramadan month alone, more than 25,000 consumer complaints regarding gas problems were received. In the past year, a total of 132,376 complaints about low pressure were logged, with more than 131,000 allegedly resolved.
SNGPL MD insured legislators of continued efforts to improve the complaint system.
After the briefing, the Senate Committee completed discussions on public complaints related to gas supply considering the case that was currently resolved.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik also treated the meeting and recognized that the petroleum sector received less attention in the past year due to an increased focus on the electricity sector. He noted that local gas consumption is steadily declining, while imported LNG is now used even for domestic stoves.
The Minister also admitted that the implementation of the policy of oil refineries is still awaiting, although he emphasized that the mineral sector sees significant foreign investment.
Meanwhile, the Director -General of the Minerals, the Committee for the Reko DIQ project, informed that production is expected to begin by 2028.
