Spoilers to Unknown Number – High School Hatcat front.
Our story starts at the end of 2021 in Beal City, Michigan, where Lauryn Licari and her boyfriend Owen begin to receive aggressive text messages from an unknown source. The documentary shows us that this began with messages like “Hi Lauryn, Owen breaks up with you,” leading to more divisive messages, including “He wants sex, bjs n, who says he doesn’t want your sry a **”.
Owen alone received as many as 30-50 messages a day. For Lauryn, these became more sexually explicit, even before she believes she would be “better if you were dead”. Local authorities were involved in January 2022 and called the FBI for reinforcements a few months later in April.
And who was behind these messages, you might ask? Lauryn’s mother, Kendra. She was going to be another classmate who was in love with Owen, using an app called Verizon to hide the numbers she used to send the lyrics. The FBI Liaison Bradley Peter noted that Kendra’s number was coming several times while looking at the case, which led to her arrest and units seized in December 2022.
You may now know the basic details, but I can’t emphasize how shocking this is to look playing out in a chronological order. Viewers will see the body tagging that Kendra is being arrested, with her trying to argue, “Realistically, many of us have probably broken the law at some point and not been caught. I’m sure people were driving intoxicated, haven’t been caught.”
Why Kendra did what she did is open for interpretation but a few solutions are suggested everywhere Unknown number – High School Catfish. Like former Beal City -Superintendent Bill Chillman tells us: “She wanted her daughter to need her in such a way that she was willing to hurt her, and that’s how she chose to do it against physically trying to make her sick, which is typically Munchausen’s behavior.”
Don’t keep your breath and binge right away … I promise this new trait is one that you will never forget.
