UNSC agreements validate the world’s confidence in Pakistan’s terror information: PM: PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday, Pakistan’s appointment to several Key of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) described terrorist bodies as a “question of great pride” and a reflection of the international community’s confidence in the country’s terrorism credentials.

The premiere comments came a day after Pakistan was elected Vice-President of the UNSC Terrorism Committee and appointed to be chairman of the Council’s Taliban Sanction Committee in 1988 in 2025.

When he highlighted the human and financial cost of terrorism, the Prime Minister noted that Pakistan had endured over 90,000 losses and suffered economic losses of over $ 150 billion. “As one of the greatest victims of terrorism, Pakistan’s victims to fight this scourge has been unparalleled,” he added.

Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope that these agreements would strengthen Pakistan’s commitment with the UN’s multilateral terrorist framework and confirm its decision to contribute to global peace and security.

Separately, Pakistan’s permanent mission to the United Nations appointments welcomed and stated that the development represented a recognition of the country’s active and constructive role in the UN system, especially its commitment as a elected member of the Security Council.

“These agreements are an international recognition of Pakistan’s fight against terrorism,” the mission said in a statement.

It added that Pakistan remained obliged to work closely with the United Nations and other Member States in maintaining the UN -Charter and contributing to the global fighting of terrorism through international cooperation.

According to the updated list of chairs for UNSC’s subsidiary bodies, Denmark will assume the chairman of 1267 ISIL (DA’ESH) and al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee in 2025, when Russia and Sierra Leone were appointed Vice-President. Algeria will lead the Committee on Terrorism in 1373, while France, Pakistan and Russia will act as its Vice -President.

In addition to being chairman of the sanctions committee in 1988 in 2025, Pakistan will work with Guyana and Russia, who have been appointed vice -chairman of the same committee. The committee in 1988 oversees the implementation of sanctions – including active freezes, travel bans and arms embargoes – on individuals and units linked to the Taliban, which poses a threat to peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s recent elections as a non-permanent member of the Security Council in the 2025-26 sight further cement its diplomatic status at the UN. The country secured 182 votes out of 193 at last year’s elections in the general meeting, which essentially surpassed the required majority of two -thirds.

The UN Security Council is composed of 15 members, including five permanent members-China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States-with Veto power and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year election periods. The current non-permanent members are Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia.
