Washington: The US Ministry of Homeland Security is considering a reality -tv show in which immigrants compete for US citizenship.
Officials say they are reviewing the idea, but have not yet made a final decision. The proposed show would contain challenges intended to test the participants’ knowledge and skills, with one person eliminated in each episode.
The plan has given rise to debate in the midst of the ongoing immigration policy changes.
To the question of the reported idea, DHS responded with a statement that the pitch “has not received approval or rejection of the staff” and that “each proposal undergoes a thorough control process before denial or approval.”
“We have to revive patriotism and civic duty in this country, and we are happy to review out-of-the-box seats,” said Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin in the statement.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the suggested show-there has risen by Canadian-American Rob Worsoff-Ville see participants from to prove that they are the most American.
“This is not ‘The Hunger Games’ for immigrants,” the newspaper quoted Worsoff as saying – a reference to a dystopian novel and the subsequent film about children who were forced to kill each other in a TV competition on survival.
“This is not, ‘Hi, if you lose, we will send you out on a boat out of the country,'” he said.
The journal reviewed a 36-page slide from Worsoff’s team, outlining the proposed program, which would watch participants compete for an hour of episodes.
This may include a Gold Rush Challenge, where participants pick up the most precious metal from a mine or a competition where teams work together to gather the chassis in a model T car, according to the newspaper.
The show would start with an arrival in Ellis Island – the traditional entry point for immigrants to the United States – and would see one participant eliminated by Episode.
The news comes when former reality -tv star President Donald Trump’s administration has moved to end temporarily protected status (TPS) for different groups of immigrants it had shielded from deportation.
Federal law allows the government to give TPS to foreign citizens who cannot certainly return home due to war, natural disasters or other “extraordinary” conditions.
Since accession, Trump has been trying to strip TPS protection against citizens in countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti and Venezuela as part of his wider crash on immigration.
This crash – led by DHS – has included immigration attacks, arrests and deportations.
