The United States Central Command (US Centcom) has expressed gratitude to Pakistan for his role in capturing the greatest suspect behind the deadly suicide bombing in 2021 at Kabul Airport in Afghanistan. In a post on his official Urdu-Language Account on X, US Centcom Pakistan’s collaboration to arrest Mohammad Sharifullah, also known as Jafar, an alleged Daesh-Khorasan (ISIS-K) operative. “We are Pakistan grateful for its cooperation on the arrest of Sharifullah, the greatest suspect in the attack on the monastery at Kabul Airport in Afghanistan, and for his cooperation with the United States to bring the suspect to justice,” the statement reads. The bombing in August 2021 at Kabul Airport, which took place in the midst of the chaotic US-led withdrawal from Afghanistan, killed at least 170 Afghan civilians and 13 US officials. Sharifullah was arrested in Pakistan after intelligence provided by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), according to a news agency report. He has confessed to scout the attack route, officials said. US President Donald Trump announced the arrest at his address at a joint congressional meeting, Sharifullah called a “monster” and thanked Pakistan for its help. “This is a very huge day for the families affected,” Trump said. Sharifullah has since been extradited to the United States and produced before a court in Virginia. According to the US Department of Justice, he has admitted involvement in several attacks, including the attack in March 2024 at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall. He allegedly provided video instructions on the use of AK-style rifles and other weapons for attackers. US Centcom highlighted the collaboration between Islamabad and Washington and said that both nations share a “common interest in the war on terrorism.”
