The United States will consider the “every armed attack” on the Qatari territory as a threat to Washington and will give the Arab Gulf -State security guarantees, the White House said, after an Israeli strike in the country last month.
“In light of the continued threats to the state of Qatar, which has been set by foreign aggression, it is US policy to guarantee security and territorial integrity in the state of Qatar against external attack,” said an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump.
In the event of an attack on Qatar, the United States will “take all legal and appropriate measures – including diplomatic, economic and, if necessary, military – to defend the United States and the State of Qatar and to restore peace and stability,” the order said.
The deal comes after an Israeli strike on the most important US regional allies on September 9 who targeted officials from the Palestinian group Hamas, discussing an American peace proposal for the Gaza war.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Qatar’s Prime Minister from the White House Monday, apologized for strikes and promised not to do it again, the United States said.
Netanyahu was in Washington to meet Trump and had until then been defiantly since the order on September 9 strikes.
Qatar is an important American ally in the Gulf and hosts the largest US military base in the region of al-Udeid, which also includes a regional headquarters for elements of US central command.
