Venus Williams has turned the clock back in Queens, but her Cinderella race at this year’s US Open has ended.
The 45-year-old collaborated with Leylah Fernandez on the double bracket and did it all the way to the quarterfinals before the top seed of Taylor Townsend and Kateounces Siniaková took them down 6-1, 6-2.
When the match ended after 56 minutes in Louis Armstrong Stadium, Williams smiled as she went to the net to shake hands with Siniaková and then embraced Townsend. Thousands of spectators got up to give Williams a standing ovation; Townsend and Siniaková then joined, welcoming Williams.

Siniaková called William’s “a legend” and said it was “a privilege” to play against her.
The 45-year-old Williams previously left the first round of both singles bent against Karolína Muchová in three sets and mixed doubles. She was out of competition for 16 months until she returned to play at a Washington tournament in July. Her latest big tournament was 2023 US Open.
Williams and Fernandez, a 22-year-old from Canada, who was 2021-single-runner-up in New York, received a wild-card post from the US Tennis Association and had not lost a set in their first three games in their debut as a team.

Townsend, currently ranked No. 1 in double rooms, and Siniaková is an experienced duo who won Wimbledon in 2024 and the Australian Open this year together. Siniaková has won a total of 10 Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles.
Townsend was in a controversy in the single bracket when Jelena Ostapenko said she was upset that Townsend did not apologize after he was helped by a network under a point. She also questioned Townsend, which warms up before the match on the web instead of baseline. After their fight, the two came in a heated discussion.
Williams is of course the owner of the 14 Grand Slam titles in women’s double rooms with her sister, Serena, who left the professional tour of 2022.
The older Williams siblings have also won seven major single championships and two more in mixed doubles.

She was the oldest player in Singles Draw at the US Open since 1981.
