Minneapolis: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said a 57-year-old suspect was arrested on Sunday in the killing of a democratic state legislator and her husband while she made up as a police officer.
The arrest was the culmination of a huge manhunt after shooting the death on Melissa Hortman, the supreme Democrat of the Minnesota House, and her husband, Mark, the previous day, which Walz characterized as a “politically motivated murder.”
Authorities said that the arrested suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, also allegedly shot and wounded another democratic legislature, State Sensator John Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, at home a few miles away.
Walz said Hoffman, hit by nine bullets, was heading for improvement after emerging from his last operation.
Boelter has links to Evangelical Ministries and is claimed to be a security expert with experience in the Gaza Strip and Africa, according to online postings and public items reviewed by Reuters.
Boelter was charged with two counts of murder at the second degree and two counts of the second degree of murder attempts, a criminal complaint showed from Hennpin County.
Three of these charges can be punished with prison conditions of up to 40 years, according to the complaint, Sunday.
When the police applied for Boelter’s SUV after the shooting discovered the three AK-47 attack rifles, a 9 mm small arms and a list of other public officials, including their addresses, showed the complaint.
The killing was the latest episode of the high profiled US political violence.
Such incidents range from a 2022 attack on former Democratic American House speaker Nancy Pelosi’s man at their home to an assumption of Donald Trump last year, and a fire -founding attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s house in April.
