Using AI tools like Microsoft Copilot can help officials save weeks of working over a year, new government research has claimed.
The British government had 20,000 officials across 12 different organizations using Microsoft Copilot over several months, using the service to prepare documents, take meeting lines, seek internal information and even personalize recommendations to unemployed job -seeking benefits that benefit.
The study claimed to find greater productivity and efficiency increases from using Copilot, where workers save on average between 19 and 24 minutes a day – equivalent to approx. Two weeks per Person per year.

The study, which took place over 30 September to 31 December 2024, says these savings corresponded to giving a full year back to 1,130 people, enabling them to focus on higher value tasks rather than admin-based work.
“These findings show that AI is not just a future promise – it’s a current reality,” commented technology secretary Peter Kyle.
“Whether it helps to prepare documents, prepare lesson plans, or cut down on routine admin, AI tools save officials every day. This means we can focus more on delivering faster, more personal support where it really counts.”
The study also denotes the largest implementation of Microsoft Copilot in the British government to date, with workers using the platform across words, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.
“AI is the most transformative technology of our time and we are already seeing its potential to reshape the supply of public service,” noted Darren Hardman, CEO Microsoft UK.
“This can lock new levels of growth, efficiency and innovation for the country. The government’s Microsoft 365 -Copilotek Periment shows what is possible when people are authorized with the right tools: 26 minutes per day (almost 2 weeks a year) less time on administrator, more time to deliver what matters. And the really exciting part is, this is just the beginning.”
