- Globe Life was hit by a cyber attack in the summer of 2024 that affected thousands of users
- The study has now decided that the attack affected more than 850,000 victims
- The attackers tried to pressure the business for money
US insurance company Globe Life says about 855,000 people are now believed to have been affected by the ransomware attack, as it has recently suffered.
In mid -June 2024, the company reported a cyber security event where unknown third parties gained access to sensitive customer data through one of its web portals. In an 8-k form filed to SEC at the time, Globe Life said Crooks had access to sensitive data on at least 5,000 customers, but emphasized that the final number was confirmed after an in-depth study probably will be much larger.
The new study has now claimed that “about 850,000 additional people” were affected, with the named perpetrators who steal people’s names, email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses and in some cases, birth dates, personal security numbers, health-related data and others Insurance information – but fortunately financial information was not stolen.
No payment
Globe Life said attackers tried to extort money for the stolen data but failed.
“The company did not pay the required extortion payment and instead informed federal law enforcement and continues to help law enforcement in the investigation of this activity,” Globe Life said in its latest report.
“The company has initiated the process of providing notification to and credit monitoring services to these individuals.”
Although Crooks required a ransom payment for the data, they did not lock the systems or delete files from the affected systems. Therefore, the violation did not affect the company’s operations, Globe Life stressed. Therefore, it does not expect the attack to have a significant impact on its business. Costs and expenses derived from this attack will be covered by insurance.
Globe Life is one of the largest suppliers of life and health insurance in the United States with an annual income of more than $ 5 billion.
