- CPU-wise, however, Switch 2 is closer to PlayStation 4
Port Studio Virtuos thinks it would be easy to bring an Xbox Series game to Nintendo Switch 2 considering their technical similarities.
In an interview with WCCFTECH, Alex Heise, Director of Business Development in Virtuoso North America, and Eoin O’Grady, Technical Director at Virtuos’ subsidiary Black Shamrock, discussed Nintendo’s new hardware and its technical capabilities.
According to O’Grady, both Consoles’ GPUs are the same in power despite Switch 2, which performs lower than the Xbox Series S and offers Nvidias Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), but thinks it would still be an easy task to port a series game that works on 60fps to the latest console.
“GPU-wise, Switch 2 works a little during the series S; this difference is more noticeable in hand-held state,” said O’Grady. “However, the series S does not support technologies like DLSS, as Switch 2 does. This does the GPU capacities in the two consoles that are generally comparable.
However, the technical director noted that CPU clog is a “clearer distinction between the two consoles” and Switch 2 is closer to PlayStation 4 in that regard as it has a slightly more powerful CPU.
“Since most games tend to be more GPU-bound than CPU-bound when well optimized, the effect of this difference depends largely of the specific game and its target image frequency,” O’Grady explained.
“Any game shipping of 60 FPS in the series S should easily port to Switch 2 .. Likewise, a 30FPS series S-game that is GPU-bound, also port well. Games with complex physics, animations or other CPU-intensive elements may have additional challenges in reaching 30 or 60 FPS or requiring extra optimization during porting.”
Cyberpunk 2077Which can only hit the 60fps on the Xbox series, but not consistently on PS4, just received an official Switch 2 port. However, this version does not offer 60FPS in the same way that the Series S does, and instead contains two modes to choose from while anchored, including a 40FPS performance mode and a 30fps quality mode.
