- Volvo North Amerrica Employee Personal Data Stolen through violation of HR Software provider environmental data
- Attackers access to names and SSNs; Ransomware Group Datacarry assumed responsibility
- Environmental Data’s ADATO system that is widely used across Swedish public and private sectors
Volvo North America has told her employees that some of their sensitive information was stolen in a recent ransomware attack for supply chain.
In a review of data violation, shared with Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, the carmaker explained what happened when the data was stolen and what the victims can do to remain in safety.
“We were recently informed that a supplier of Human Resources software to the Volvo group, Environmental Data, was a victim of a security event where some of your personal information may have been accessed,” the company explained.
Datacarry beats Adato
Environmental data is a Swedish company that provides IT systems/support to HR, working environment, rehabilitation, absence/illness and related staff workflows.
One of their more prominent products is Adato, a system for management of sickness absence, rehabilitation, preventive measures and the like.
The incident happened on August 20, 2025 and was only discovered three days later. Volvo was notified on September 2nd when Environmental Data discovered that its ‘clients’ data also became access to.
The study also decided that attackers managed to steal full names and social security number (SSN). While it is certainly not the most dangerous cyberattack that has ever happened – there are still plenty of ways this information can be exploited in secondary attacks.
Volvo did not say how many people were affected or who the threat actors are, but some reports have said the attack was claimed by a ransomware group known as Datacarry who violated Adato and compromised several other organizations.
The entire violation allegedly affected at least 1.5 million people, with others losing phone numbers, e -mail addresses, dates of birth and more.
Environmental Data’s ADATO system is widely used across Sweden, and its customer base spans a few key industries.
The most important are municipalities and other local government agencies, universities and higher education institutions, regional public sector organizations (such as health regions and joint service administrations), companies in the private sector (especially in HR-heavy industries) and non-profit organizations with large staff bases.
