Karachi:
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh General Secretary Waqar Mehdi was elected to the Senate by a clear majority on Tuesday and secured 111 votes against his opponent, Nighat Mirza of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), which managed only 36.
The election was held to fill the general senate seat that was available after the adoption of senior PPP leader Senator Taj Haider.
The vote took place in Sindh Assembly Building, which had been appointed as the election center for the day.
According to SINDH Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, the vote began at 1 p.m. 9 and continued continuously until 4pm. Out of 161, members of the SINDH assembly elaborated on 149 their votes.
Two ballots were rejected due to incorrect markings. Sindh -Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah passed the final vote before the electoral window closed.
PPP’s dominant presence in the Sindh assembly, where it holds 116 seats, gave the party a pleasant edge over its rivals. MQM has 36 seats, while five members are allies with Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami have one.
The minimal threshold required for victory was 81 votes, a Mark PPP crossed lightly.
It chose the choice of the rare political activity and a sense of humming in the otherwise muted Sindh assembly rooms.
After the end of the vote, the vote began immediately and the result was officially announced by the recurring officer and provincial election commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan.
