Islamabad/Lahore:
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in coordination with Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), has launched the cautionary evacuation efforts for society along the river Sutlej after a sharp increase in the water level.
According to the National Emergency Operations Center, the discharge at Harike rose to 122,890 CUSERCs early Friday morning. The flow of water continues to rise at Ganda Singh Wala and is expected to reach 120,000 CUSSCS, while on his head Suleimanki can approach 100,000 CUSSCS.
A new monsoon system is expected to enter the top regions of the country from the Arabian Sea and Bengalbugt, which starts on Saturday night, followed by a western wave from August 23. The eighth spell is expected to bring heavy rain over the upper uplands of the river’s sutlej, which increases flood risks.
Officials said the water level in Sutlej is expected to rise sharply within the next 24 hours due to heavy monsoon rain and water releases from Indian reservoirs.
Flood Forecast Division (FFD) Lahore reported that the Indus River at Guddu is likely to experience high flood, while Sukkur is expected to see medium -sized flood levels.
Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala is expected to carry 70,000-80,000 CUSSCS, categorized as medium flood, while Taunsa barrier can also face medium-sized flooding conditions.
Nationwide National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that from June 26 to August 21, monsoon -related events have claimed 771 lives and left 993 people injured. Punjab recorded 165 fatalities and 584 injuries, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa 465 deaths and 279 injuries, Sindh 42 Deaths, Azad Kashmir 23, Gilgit-Baltistan 45 and Islamabad Eight.
More than 4,700 houses were damaged or destroyed, 661 kilometers of roads and 234 bridges were affected, while over 5,400 livestock perished. Over the past 24 hours alone, 24 deaths were reported, 15 injuries, 345 damaged houses and 380 livestock losses, mostly in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwas Buner, Swat and Swabi districts due to flash floods and landslides.
Helping operations are underway with 482 emergency relief camps established nationwide, protection of over 29,000 displaced and provide food and medical help.
