In a media release, Warner Bros. Discovery finally announced when its HBO streaming service is launched in Australia, and that’s a lot before than you might have imagined.
Max comes to Australia on March 31 and puts it within the “first half of next year” delivered by WBD back in September.
This means that Max will be the first port of call to see the second season of The last of us – who debut solely on the streamer on April 14 – as well as other upcoming shows as The: Welcome to Derry and A knight of the seven kingdoms, which is set in the world of Game of Thrones.
Max is launched with a number of subscription levels, including premium, standard and an ad-supported option. How much these levels cost has not been revealed.
Alongside Max, WBD and FoPel also announced the reversal of a new page in their partnership. This new chapter will see FoPel subscribers with the Internet Association IQ3, IQ4 or IQ5 devices access the basics of ADS Max Plan for free. There is no word yet about how FoXel now subscriptions will be included in the equation.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced last year that it wanted to extend its relationship with FoXel to it directly to consumer room, and this agreement does just that.
Michael Brooks, general manager of WBD Australia and New Zealand, said, “WBD has a long history in Australia, and we know our world -class content from HBO, Warner Bros., Discovery and more are incredibly popular with the audience here.
“We have a clear strategy for maximizing range through our direct-to-consumer app and distribution partnerships, and our collaboration with FoXel at launch is a testimony to it. We can’t wait for fans across the country to experience max. “
So what does it mean to binge?
There is no official statement yet on what Max’s arrival means to binge – the current Home of HBO content in Australia – but there is a key element in this news that makes us believe that it may not be desire.
Based on the use of the term “debut exclusively” when referring to the next second season of The last of usThese are clear future seasons of the last of us will only be available at Max in the future – not at Binge.
The last of us Season 2 will be the first major HBO release to arrive after Max’s local launch, and if it does not land on Binge, it is relatively safe to assume that future HBO shows not either. Of course, it would be a huge blow to what is currently one of the best streaming services in Australia.
Of course, Binge is not only home to HBO in Australia, with shows like Colin from accounts and Mr. Inbetween Also available for stream, but these are far from being the biggest draw of the service. Two of the best shows that are currently streaming in Australia – Pitt and The white lotus – Are both HBO series that debut weekly at Binge.
Without new content from HBO, it’s hard to know how Binge will continue to compete with them like Disney Plus, Stan, Prime Video and Netflix. And it’s even harder to defend its AU $ 22p/M Premium Price Tag.
Maybe we see a groundbreaking price reduction after a number of price increases over Aussie streamers. Maybe we will see Binge combining more with FoXel correctly. Or maybe Binge will change gear and collaborate with another major production company.
Whatever is the case, it will be an interesting next few months. And if you wish to catch up The last of us Before his second season, Binge is still the only place to do it.
