- Strava has commented on her ongoing feud with Garmin
- Although it cannot comment on the legal dispute, Strava made a statement to Techradar
- The statement confirmed everyone that it would capitulate to some of Garmin’s requirements, despite stating “we do not agree”
Strava has broken her silence on his ongoing feud with Garmin, which makes a statement to Techradar after I reached out to comment. Strava said that “Although we do not agree” with Garmin’s terms, it will change how it attributes data from its partners and outlines its next steps.
What’s going on?
For those who were not on, Strava brought a lawsuit against Garmin, referring to his violation of patents referring to segments and heatmaps, where they asked for temporarily stop the sale of the best Garmin watches.
Strava’s Chief Product Officer Matt Salazar later posted on Reddit and said it “set the record just about Garmin,” but refers to a completely different problem where Garmin wants expanded attribution (including a logo) when a Strava user uploads data from a Garmin watch. This is expected to take effect on November 1st.
In Reddit Post, Salazar Garmin accused of using “Strava and any other partner as an advertising platform – they told us they are interested in their marketing than your user experience”. Strava said “We consider this your data” and asked users to have their voices heard.
Unfortunately, this was left as the post has 0 upvotes and more than 1,400 comments. Strava users made it clear that if they had to choose between their apparatus and their expensive running watch, they would choose their Garmin and accused Strava of hypocrisy. Strava’s statement
I reached out to both Strava and Garmin to comment on the question, and while Garmin told me that it simply could not comment on legal disputes, Strava offered a more significant statement.
“Unfortunately, we are unable to comment on continuous disputes. Although we do not agree with the extensive branding that Garmin is forcing, remaining uninterrupted connection to the subgroup of our society, which uses Garmin, still our highest priority, and we have also decided that we will give similar attribution to all our unit partners who are fair in the future.
“Our goal is to make branding as not -intrusive as possible, and we think it’s the right thing to do in light of the mandatory changes that Garmin asks all developers to implement on November 1st.”
Unpacking this statement seems that Strava will be capitulated to Garmin’s requirement for the attribution and use of its logo to Strava posts uploaded from Garmin devices. Strava does this in a lighter time of it, as a lot of Strava’s data comes from Garmin watches and bicycle computers – cutting off that data source would be disastrous. Strava Muller allegedly a stock exchange listing so it wants to look as good as possible before appearing on the stock exchange.
It seems that Strava will build this extended attribution functionality to data drawn from all its partners “to be fair”, so expect to train originally from Apple Watches, Samsung Watches and other devices to carry their own logos in the future.
This is linked to a report from Gadgets and Wearables, where communication from Strava to developers shows instructions to build this for future apps if they use data originating from Garmin devices via Strava’s application programming interface.
As for the legal disputes about the potential patent violations from Garmin, none of the pages comment yet. The two questions are definitely tied together, so I wonder if it seems to be resolving, Strava will withdraw his trial or look to put out of court. Either way, I can’t imagine Garmin’s best running watches will be pulled off the shelves before Black Friday.
