- Asus is investigating reports of issues with Ryzen 9800X3D CPUs
- These chips are failing in their 800 series motherboards, according to posts on Reddit
- This follows previous issues with the Ryzen 9800X3D in ASRock (and other) motherboards
Asus has issued a statement to acknowledge that they are investigating reports of issues with Ryzen 9800X3D CPUs failing with their 800 series motherboards.
VideoCardz noted the statement, which comes after a cluster of recent reports on Reddit detailing issues with these processors and Asus cards.
Asus informs us: “We are aware of recent reports regarding AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs and Asus AMD 800 series motherboards and have initiated an immediate internal review.
“Our teams perform proactive product compatibility and performance checks, work closely with AMD to validate reported cases and ensure ongoing stability and quality. We seek to provide timely solutions to ensure our products and services meet expected standards.”
It is of course good to hear that the concerns here are being directly addressed. What happens with these CPUs is that the reports (like this one on Reddit) indicate that they are dying and the system won’t boot (obviously) with the ‘Q-Code 00’ error.
Meanwhile, pending the results of the review, Asus advises those who own an 800 series motherboard to update to the latest BIOS to “help ensure system stability”.
Of course, this applies to all motherboards – the latest BIOS should provide the most reliable experience running your PC components (not just the CPU). Although don’t confuse the ‘latest BIOS’ with any pre-beta release – these are not fully tested and can cause more problems than they solve.
Stick to the latest full version, avoid beta software, especially with something like BIOS, which is a sensitive area to implement technically still unfinished releases.
Analysis: a long-running saga
If all of this sounds familiar, it’s because there are long-standing reports of issues with Ryzen 9800X3D processors falling over like this. In the past these have been more of an issue with ASRock motherboards, although other brands have been affected – it’s just that there is a noticeable increase right now in complaints around Asus boards.
Eventually the problems with ASRock motherboards were put down to a “memory compatibility issue” with previous BIOS versions and that issue was fixed. Even so, after that fix, there have still been about 50 reported cases of 9800X3D CPUs failing in the Reddit megathread about the problems with (mainly) ASRock boards. (Some of these earlier cases were Asus motherboards as well).
For some 9800X3D owners, the controversy continues to rage across social media posts, and there is some unhappiness (to say the least) about pinning down the cause.
Although the truth is, this can be a complex problem with multiple causes. And don’t forget that the 9800X3D is the kind of gaming chip that gets tinkered with and overclocked – perhaps significantly by enthusiasts – which could certainly make these kinds of mistakes more likely to happen. (Other Ryzen 9000 chips have been affected by this issue, I should make it clear, but it hits the popular 9800X3D the most – perhaps in part due to its positioning with enthusiasts, as mentioned).
We can only hope that the investigation that Asus is conducting will shed some further light on the matter, especially since there is a newcomer taking the baton from the 9800X3D now. This is the even faster, higher clocked Ryzen 9850X3D that AMD has just announced will be released next week – with a more tempting price tag than expected.
