We were liars season 2 is officially on its way, and fans aren’t too surprised after the thrilling drama became a hit on one of the top streaming services earlier this year.
After becoming Prime Video’s new #1 show when it premiered in June, it’s no surprise We were liars will come back. And there’s plenty more source material to go with the show based on the works of E. Lockhart.
So here’s everything we know so far about the potential release date, confirmed cast, plot rumors and more of We were liars season 2.
Full spoilers follow before We were liars season 1. Plus, spoilers ahead We were liars season 2 will also appear.
We Were Liars Season 2: Release Date Prediction
There is no We were liars season 2 release date yet, but we do know that the show was officially renewed for September 17, 2025, with an Instagram post revealing that it’s “coming soon.”
In a statement via The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s co-creators Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie said, “We loved making the show with so many spectacular people. The fan reaction was truly special. There are still tons of secrets buried on Beechwood Island, and we can’t wait to keep digging them up.”
Season 1 was released in June 2025, a year after filming began. So, if I were to predict a release date for season 2, I would say it will be late 2026 or early 2027 at the earliest.
We Were Liars Season 2 Trailer: Is There One?
As filming has not yet started We were liars season 2, there is no trailer to share – and I imagine that will be the case for a while.
Season 1’s official trailer dropped just weeks before the show premiered on Prime Video, so I imagine we won’t be able to share a trailer until at least late 2026.
We Were Liars Season 2 Cast Confirmed
Full spoilers follow We were liars season 1.
Writer E. Lockhart has revealed that some of the cast will return for season 2, according to Deadline, and while the shock twist in We were liars season 1 finale revealed the deaths of key characters, we also know that the cast interacts with the ghosts of said people.
So for Season 2, I’m going to predict that we’ll see all of the main cast returning:
- Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence Sinclair Eastman
- Caitlin FitzGerald as Penny Sinclair
- Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair
- Candice King as Bess Sinclair
- Esther McGregor as Mirren Sinclair Sheffield
- David Morse as Harris Sinclair
- Joseph Zada as Johnny Sinclair Dennis
- Rahul Kohli as Ed Patil
- Shubham Maheshwari as Gat Patil
There is also talk, referenced in the same Deadline piece where Lockhart confirmed returning characters, that younger versions of the Sinclair sisters will also be cast for Season 2.
While there’s no official news on these castings yet, I’ll be sure to update here as soon as we hear.
We Were Liars Season 2 Plot Details and Rumors
Full spoilers follow We were liars season 1. Potential spoilers also follow We were liars season 2.
While We were liars season 1 followed E Lockhart’s novel of the same name, season 2 will follow her second book of the title The Liars’ Family – with a little twist.
Speaking to Deadline, Lockhart teased: “We have Season 2 planned We were liarsand showrunners, Julie Plec and Carina Adley Mackenzie, take the story that’s in The Liars’ Familymy second book, but they also add all sorts of fun new twists.
“They have lots of ideas up their sleeve, so people who know it The Liars’ Family will see everything they want to see, but they will also be surprised. I think it will be really fun.”
Without giving too much away, as you can read the book if you really want to know what We were liars season 2 will be about but The Liars’ Family is a prequel story alluded to in the Season 1 finale.
The book tells the story of a summer when the Sinclair sisters were involved in their own mystery on Beechwood Island when they were teenagers.
As Deadline explains, “The plan is to interweave that material with the stories of the younger generation and also cast younger versions of the three Sinclair sisters.”
And there is direct reference to this in the season 1 finale, when Carrie and Bess discuss whether an incident in their past, during the summer of 16, was the cause of all the terrible things that have now happened to them in their present. But details of what they actually did that summer faithful have been kept under wraps.
There’s also the fact that at the end of the finale, while it was assumed that Johnny apparently passed on from the world along with the other Liars, that’s actually not the case.
Instead, Carrie sees her son for the first time in the kitchen and talks to him. But why he hasn’t moved on is a season 2 mystery.
Whether the same can be assumed for the souls of Gat and Mirren is unclear right now. But Maheshwari, who played Gat in Season 1, told Us that he would be open to returning if the opportunity presents itself: “If it happens, I’m so excited. I’m so ready for it, but I really don’t know. It’s hard to say. I’m sure they have ideas. I’m not really aware of what they’re thinking.”
Will there be more seasons of We Were Liars?
The Liars’ Family is not the last book in We were liars family – and that’s because Lockhart’s third novel in November 2025, We fell apartwas published.
And speaking to Deadline, Lockhart revealed that while We fell apart is a standalone story nod to the world (and two seasons). So when it comes to developing this into a third season, well, Lockhart says, “All I can really say is that my showrunners have early copies of this book, and we’ll see what they want to do together.”
But what that means for a potential Season 3 is currently unclear. As explained by Variety, We fell apart “follows a new set of characters who have their own secrets to keep and mysteries to solve.”
This includes Matilda, who is invited to spend the summer at Hidden Beach with her long-lost father: a reclusive artist named Kingsley Cello. But when she gets there, her father is nowhere to be seen and instead meets her half-brother Meer, a former child star named Brock, and a brooding boy named Tatum who lives by the ocean home.
Again, Lockhart explains how even though it is a separate book, it still has ties to We were liars universe: “The first thing I would say is that it can be read on its own, but for people who have read ‘We Were Liars,’ I think what they will like the most, which starts near the beginning of the book, is when the characters break into Beechwood Island.
Whether this will be picked up as a spin-off, as a season 3 or not at all, we’ll have to wait and see.
