Lawyer Salman Safdar submitted a seven-page report to the Supreme Court detailing the living conditions of former prime minister Imran Khan in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
The court had appointed Safdar as an amicus curiae (friend of the court), and directed him to meet the jailed former prime minister and submit a report on 11 February.
“A copy of the report, obtained by Pakinomist newsoutlined the conditions of Imran Khan’s detention, including the facilities available to him during his incarceration.
Daily routine and food
The jailed former prime minister described in the report authored by Safdar that his daily routine varies between summer and winter.
“He has breakfast around 9:45 am, followed by recitation of the Holy Quran from around 11:30 am for about an hour. He then undertakes physical exercise using the limited equipment available to him, including an exercise bike, two 9-kilogram weights and a bar,” the report said.
“Around 1:15 p.m., after taking a shower, he is given access to the loitering shed within the secure area where he can sit or walk. Lunch is eaten between 3:30 and 4 p.m., and at 5 p.m. he is again allowed to go for a short walk. From about 5:30 p.m. to 10 a.m. the following morning, it remained his cells.”
Imran stated that for breakfast in the morning he consumes a cup of coffee, porridge and a few dates.
“For lunch [his main meal of the day]Imran stated that the weekly meal plan is selected by him and is self-funded by his family, consisting of two days of chicken, two days of meat, two days of lentils (daal) and/or two days of ‘chaat/snacks’, the report said.
He further stated that bottled drinking water is available to him. Regarding dinner, Imran said that he does not consume a full meal and instead consumes fruit, milk and dates.
Facilities
According to a report submitted by the petitioner, Imran Khan has access to basic winter facilities with a small heater/fan available in his living cell and hot water available at all times.
But according to the report, PTI’s founding chairman described the summer months as particularly challenging due to extreme heat and humidity.
“Living conditions in the summer are very difficult. Despite using mosquito repellent and installing a room cooler, the heat and insects make it difficult to rest and the quality of my sleep suffers,” the report said.
The report mentioned that Imran has also expressed concern about food storage, noting the absence of a refrigerator. “I only get a cooler, which is not always effective in extreme weather conditions.” I have experienced food poisoning two to three times during the summer months,” the report quoted the PTI founder as saying.
Security
On security issues, the report indicated that the former prime minister had no concerns. “Approximately ten surveillance cameras are installed in the area covering most areas. One camera covers the shower area, but none are installed inside the room/cell,” it added.
Living conditions
According to the report, Imran’s cell contains a single mattress, four pillows and two blankets. “It was further observed that five pairs of shoes/trainers were placed under the bed,” the inspection noted. Personal items such as a prayer mat, a tasbeeh, two towels and toiletries were also present.
The report further mentioned that about 100 books, two wrapped apples, two dumbbells and other personal care items including tissue paper, mouthwash, an air freshener, shaving gel and a shaving kit were found in the cell.
Regarding the cell’s toilet, the report stated: “Inside the cell, a toilet measuring approximately 4½ x 4½ feet was observed separated by a five foot high wall with no ceiling. Outside the toilet area there was a hand basin with access to both hot and cold water and a mirror. Regarding the cleanliness of the toilet, some room for improvement of the toilet was observed.”
For ventilation, the cell reportedly has two openings measuring 2 x 2 feet at opposite ends of the ceiling for cross ventilation. But “despite the toilet located in the cell, no exhaust system is installed,” the report added.
