Wonder Manis the first Marvel TV series of the year almost here. Actually with Wonder Man set to be released on Disney+ on January 27th or 28th – depending on where you live – you don’t have much time left to brush up on your Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) homework.
Granted, you don’t have to watch a single Marvel movie or TV series to enjoy Wonder Man because it is largely a self-contained narrative. However, there are some story and character-based connections to other MCU productions, so they’re worth watching if you need a reminder of who certain people are and/or want to know what happened in the MCU in the past Wonder Man. So read on to see which movies and shows you should catch before it premieres on Disney+.
Which MCU movies should I stream before Wonder Man?
Ahead of the Marvel Phase 6 show’s arrival, there are four movies you’ll want to see.
The first two – 2013s Iron Man 3 and the 2021s Shang-Chi – are required viewings due to Trevor Slattery. A washed-up actor and former drug addict played by British icon Ben Kingsley, he is not only a prominent figure in the aforementioned films, but also the co-lead of Wonder Man. So it is necessary to check out these movies on Disney+, aka one of the best streaming services in the world, to better understand who Slattery is before Wonder Man is released.
As for the other two films, they are led by Spider-Man and can be considered vital viewing for anyone wanting more information on the Department of Damage Control (DoDC).
This US-funded government agency keeps an eye on enhanced individuals it deems to be a threat to the North American superpower. The DoDC made their MCU debut in 2017 Spider-Man: Homecoming and later appeared in the 2021s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Granted, the DoDC has a bit part to play in these movies, so they’re not essential viewing if you don’t feel like sitting through nearly five hours of storytelling. You can also probably just watch the required scenes on YouTube if you can’t commit to streaming Tom Holland’s first and third standalone MCU entries.
What Marvel TV shows should I stream before Wonder Man launches?
Two live-action Disney+ series and a short TV movie are worth checking out for additional context on DoDC and Slattery.
As for the former, Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk: Lawyer contains DoDC. The group is shown in all but one chapter Ms. Marvelwhile they appear in episodes 3, 8 and 9 of the She-Hulk‘s live-action show.
Finally, you want to see the Marvel One-Shot with the title All Hail the King. One-Shots are a collection of short TV specials that the comic book giant used to make to spotlight specific MCU characters. Starring Slattery All Hail the King takes place between Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chiso it’s worth streaming if you have 14 minutes to spare.
