The University of Michigan fired Sherrone Moore after the school found “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with an employee – hours later he was jailed.
It’s a pretty quick fall for Moore, who less than two years ago was on top of the college football world as a national champion.
Moore found himself in controversy during the investigation of Michigan’s potential license plate theft, but this controversy trumps them all.
Here’s a look at how Moore got to where he is today.

Game days
Moore is a former college football player who stood at 6-foot-5 and over 300 pounds during his college days. After spending his first two years at a community college near his hometown, he moved to Oklahoma and played there for two years.
Moore played in 14 games as with the Sooners and won the Big 12 Championship in both seasons. In 2007, they defeated top-ranked Missouri in the Big 12 title game, but the Sooners lost the Fiesta Bowl both seasons.

First trainer appearance, rise through the ranks
Just a year after graduating from Oklahoma, Moore joined the Louisville coaching staff as a graduate assistant. He was promoted to full-time assistant in 2012 and became the team’s tight ends coach.
Moore left to hold the same position at Central Michigan in 2014 before also becoming the team’s assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator in 2017. In 2018, he then landed in Ann Arbor to become the Wolverines’ tight ends coach.

University of Michigan
Moore was the tight ends coach through 2020 and in early 2021 was promoted to the team’s co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Michigan was named the top offensive line in both 2021 and 2022, and with Jim Harbaugh running the show, the Wolverines were creeping back into a powerhouse, making the College Football Playoff both seasons for the first time.
Moore’s first taste of head coaching came in 2023, when he became acting head coach while Harbaugh served two separate three-game suspensions stemming from the sign theft scandal. Michigan completed a perfect season and won the national championship over Washington.
After Harbaugh left for the Los Angeles Chargers, Moore was promoted to head coach. His first season was a disappointment as Michigan went 8-5, but one of those wins was a huge upset as three-touchdown underdogs in Columbus against Ohio State.

Moore served a two-game suspension this season as the investigation into the sign-stealing scandal continued, and despite going 9-3 in the regular season, the school’s winning streak ended against Ohio State and the Wolverines missed the playoffs.
Shooting, arrest
Moore was shockingly fired on Thursday, and the University of Michigan quickly announced that it found credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with an employee. Soon after, he was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail in Michigan.
Pittsfield police said they responded to a home as part of an assault investigation. Police said a suspect was arrested and the incident does not appear to be random. Police said the suspect was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of the charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor.
Police said the investigation is ongoing. At the time of publication, Moore had not yet been charged.
Moore got married in 2015 and he and his wife have three daughters.

Francis Xavier “Biff” Poggi was named interim head coach and will be on the sidelines when Michigan takes on Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31. Earlier this season, Poggi took over for Moore during his suspension.
