- Microsoft apparently has a new OneDrive -App in the works
- The software was leaked and comes with a smooth modern design
- However, it turns out to be divided in terms of what the app can be – – But maybe we don’t see the full picture yet
Microsoft is apparently working on a new OneDrive app for Windows 11 with a clean and modern interface.
Windows Central reports that it has seen this creation leaked from Microsoft’s own servers. It seems to be a dedicated app for OneDrive, Microsoft’s Cloud Storage Service, but is a web -based piece of software rather than a natural coded for Windows 11. As always we recommend caution about leaks, but it certainly sounds exciting.
Windows Central assures us that despite being a web app ,. This fresh takeover of OneDrive is not a sluggish piece of software (as opposed to the new Outlook app, which is also a web app, but suffers from the performance front).
The new OneDrive app starts by presenting you to your photo library, even if it has a switch to flick back to its file control panel where you can see everything (pictures, documents, all your files in the cloud).
In the photo panel you can easily access your ‘moments’ – pictures from previous years taken on the current date – as well as photo albums and a gallery view.
Windows Central notes that Gallery View is “new and not currently available on the normal OneDrive site”, but there is a Gallery View with the OneDrive Web site. I suppose our sister website means it is ‘new’ as in ‘fine -tuned’, and the biggest difference seems to be a new floating menu bar that appears when choosing a photo – even if it carries pretty much the same options as the top menu bar that is called in the current OneDrive site.
In any case, the new gallery view looks smoother, just like the entire interface here, which is all very nice, shiny and modern looks. (Remember again that we need to take all this info with an appropriate dose of spices).
Analysis: What is Microsoft running here?
So yes, this is a nice intake of OneDrive in a nice app package for Windows 11, and the fact that we are told that it is running smoothly and in a performing way sounds good. It’s great to have ‘moments’ (historical photos) functionality also easily accessible. It’s part of the phone app and I get messages on my Windows 10 -PC in moments that link through to the OneDrive website, but they are strangely sporadic.
In general, however, there is not much here that is so different from the OneDrive website – not as far as this leakage shows anyway. Of course, the leaked software here may somehow be an older version of the app, or there may be more to reveal – and further info could come soon.
Why do I say that? Because, funny enough, Microsoft has its ‘Annual OneDrive Digital Event’ on October 8, so it can be an appropriate time for a disclosure. Interestingly, Blurb mentions the event “Onedrive’s latest progress in AI” quite a bit, so maybe this app will have some AI added in there too – that would hardly be a surprise.
However, this alleged new OneDrive app is a bit of a head -crasher in some ways, considering that you can already access Microsoft’s Cloud Storage Locker directly through Windows 11’s folders (File Explorer) -or the Photos app for that matter. OK, so these methods are not so neat and tidy, but still because of this, there are people responding to this leakage with confusion. They question why Microsoft would even bother with this new app – considering that, as mentioned, what doesn’t seem to do much different.
Maybe Microsoft will explain the whole next week and we just have to wait for the official revelation and details of what the OneDrive app can really do.
In the meantime, there is already moaning from a number of Windows 11 users on social media and the usual forums about how this just becomes another unwanted standard app in us that they have to strip out. This talk is combined with shouting from the cynical that this is just another way for Microsoft to try to push OneDrive (and subscriptions therein – something that the company has been eager to do in the past, it should be noted).
