Will Smith will honor his surprising bond with Wales in his own way.
In a recent chat about BBC Radio WalesThe 56-year-old actor and musician discovered his family’s hometown of several connections with Wales and joked that he should consider changing his name.
During the interview where Smith seemed to promote his upcoming British tour to his new album Based on a true storyThe host, Lucy Owen, shared that Smith’s hometown of Wynnefield, Pennsylvania, is named after a Welsh doctor, Dr. Thomas Wynne.
“So I’m Welsh! I’m Welsh, Basically. That’s what we say,” Smith said laughter.
“Yes, will! That’s what I’m trying to say. You’re Welsh and we claim you,” Lucy replied.
Smith then joked, “It may be my new name: Welsh Smith. I become the Welsh Smith.”
Lucy noticed another Smith’s link to Wales, she mentions that Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania city, where Smith’s mother lives, is Welsh for “Big Hill.”
“So ‘MAWR’ is ‘big’ and ‘brow’ means ‘hill’. You live in Big Hill,” she explained.
Smith asked, “Big Hill! Big Will Lives in Big Hill. This is crazy! Great hill. Great will. Great Still.”
