- Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Trilogy Remake is in very early development
- The trilogy includes the three original Greek mythology-based games of The God of War, God of War IIand God of War III
- God of War Sons of Sparta is now out of the studio and offering a Kratos origin story in 2D action game form
PlayStation’s Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that the original The God of War trilogy is getting the remake treatment – and I’m hyped for it.
Unfortunately, though, we don’t know much other than the fact that the game is “still very early in development,” according to the official PS Blog post. However, Sony is promising a “major” update the next time something is shared about the game, and TC Carlson himself stated in the reveal video that “next time we come back, we’ll bring something big.”
While people have pondered where the series could go after the 2022s God of War Ragnarökwhispers of – and wishes for – the original PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 games have also been flying around for a while.
Who knows if these reimagined games will shift perspectives and take on the over-the-shoulder perspective that recent games in the Norse series do, but I get the impression that this is a major revisit to the iconic PlayStation series.
If it got your juices flowing, like me, and you’re now clamoring for more The God of Warthen Santa Monica Studio had something else just for you – and I’ve already played some.
God of War Sons of Sparta was a surprisingly immediate release from yesterday’s State of Play presentation. It’s a new take on the behemoth series, but the change of perspective to be a 2D one, and the big step to a pixel art-y kind of aesthetic, brings freshness and a new way to engage with the series.
The writing is done by those who produced the fantastic stories and tales in The God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok, so I’m hoping there will be something memorable there as I go about smashing monsters with a spartan spear.
After playing the entire original The God of War games that got a PlayStation 3 release on that console back in 2023, Sons of Sparta is the perfect new game to help me overcome – along with a playthrough of God of War 3 Remastered. It will be the perfect mix of the new and the old to make the Greek mythology flow and I am already engaged and excited to see how the story shapes one of the most iconic and famous PlayStation characters.
But as a PlayStation gamer of a… certain age, it’s the OG trilogy that gets the remake treatment that’s really the main attraction here. How deep will it go? Will there be a focus on PS5 Pro performance? Remasters only go so far, and if these really are being completely redone, then we’re in for a huge treat.
