- Sony -Consoller has a vrr -problem
- Tests have revealed that it is not a problem with a specific game or monitor
- There is no solution yet but hopefully Sony will release one soon
If you have experienced steming while playing games on your PS5 or PS5 Pro, you’re not alone. And in the end, we may know what causes it, but on that front there are good and bad news.
Many players have noticed that when playing games that support 120Hz vrr (variable butth rate), there is an occasional stem. It usually takes about 20 minutes to start to stem, but when it happens, the stem repeats about every 8 seconds – and of course this ordinary cadence adds the distraction it causes.
Digital Foundry decided to investigate and have found that the problems appear to be with the console itself rather than any specific game or other hardware.
As described in its very in-depth YouTube explanation (and shared in written form via Eurogamer), Digital Foundry discovered that this visual HIK occurs on several different titles-inclusive The last of us part 2. Hogwart’s inheritance. Elden Ringand The kingdom comes liberation 2.

It also found that the tribal took place across various screens, including LG OLED TVs, a Samsung mini-led screen and an Eve Spectrum Monitor. Digital Foundry even tested the same games across both Xbox and Sony consoles and found only Sony hardware had problems.
Although Sony’s tech has been attached as the source of the problem, what has not yet been discovered is why the games are stambling.
We know well that the trunk itself is because games run within a smooth speed window (say 60 to 70 fps), then every 8 seconds, pointed immediately to 120Hz. That’s why this spike happens as we don’t know.
With all signs pointing to Sony’s tech, this is a problem, hopefully it should be able to fix a simple software update in the near future. For the time being, your best instant solution would be to disable the VRR in your system’s settings and play with a fixed update speed.
It is not ideal, but it must be teasing you over until Sony can put a patch.
