- Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB Internal Storage
- The console still supports expandable storage but you will need to use a MicroSD Express card to run games
- These cards offer faster speeds but are more expensive
Nintendo Switch 2 has a lot to do with it – a more powerful CPU to enable even more impressive games, better sound from improved speakers and yes, a larger 7.9 inch screen. But can we give a round of applause to Nintendo to increase internal storage to 256 GB?
It’s a big jump – eight times what the original Nintendo Switch offered – and that should mean you have a lot of room for games and apps. Of course, there is expandable storage. However, not all roses are in that regard … especially if you have invested in a lot of standard microSD cards for your current switch and want to make upgrade.
Why? Nintendo Switch 2 still supports expandable storage, but it only works with MicroSD Express cards. It is an important distinction as non-standard microscort does not carry the properties of ‘Express’. However, these higher-end microSD cards offer faster speeds that are more at the level of SSDs (Solid-State Drive).
This feature along with the improved performance should create a more fluid experience when reading or writing on the MicroSD Express card. You need a MicroSD Express card for use with Switch 2 to save a game or open one. However, As per this support pageCan you connect a Standard MicroSD card to view photos or screenshots.
However, the improved speeds can weigh the disadvantages other than the cost. A regular one 128 GB MicroSD cards running for about $ 20.99 (on Amazon for this SanDisk -Model), but one 128 GB MicroSD Express -Card from SanDisk is $ 49.99 (Currently $ 44.99 on Amazon). It’s quite a jump, and generally the case here -Microsd Express cards are more expensive than MicroSD cards.
So yes, it is good to increase internal storage on Switch 2 to 256 GB, and it is good to keep the option of expandable storage, but the Microsd Express requirement may cost you a little more.
Of course, there is always the chance that you may have used a MicroSD Express card in your Switch Lite, Switch or Switch OLED – it’s worth checking, and when we get closer to pre -orders (April 8 from Nintendo and April 9 from other retailers) and launch (June 5, 2025), we write about any bigger deal on this card.
