- YouTube -Music is testing a new feature similar to Spotify’s AI DJ
- More users get access and the initial reaction has been mixed
- Beta testers have praised its music trivia in -range and not -ingling comments but there is still room for improvement
YouTube music hangs behind other music flow services when it comes to features like Spotify’s AI DJ, but it’s just started to roll its own radio style trick to beta testers as part of its YouTube Labs initiative.
Currently, YouTube Labs are only available for a limited number of premium beta testers in the US and we do not know when this program will be available in other markets. However, more users are starting to get their hands on YouTube Music’s AI host -and despite ignoring AI music streaming features in general, the reactions have been pretty positive.
When Spotify rolled out AI DJ in 2023, it triggered a huge debate about AI’s presence in music flow, but was also criticized – especially for his lack of new music recommendations and crushing voiceover. I was one of these critics, but warmed up to it when Spotify introduced his song requests. As for YouTube music, it’s a two-voice host rather than a DJ, but has a similar effect.
Instead of existing as a separate device in the YouTube Music app, the AI DJ icon appears next to the ‘Thumbs up / down’ buttons in the playback screen when you listen to radio and mix. It is still in its infant, but users are already gathering their thoughts.
Good news for trivia nerves
The biggest difference between YouTube Musics AI host and Spotify’s AI DJ is that it offers “relevant stories, fan trivia and fun comment” in your listening session, while Spotify’s AI DJ simply introduces the next segment of songs. Instead of seging from one song to the next, YouTube Music’s AI host music trivia in voiceover – who goes well with musicals.
The most common frustration is its failed attempt at cheese -like humor, and there are also apparently some actual inaccuracies (youtube has treated). Others simply hate the concept in general, with Reddit -User ‘PTRCL_’, saying “I just want to listen to my music”. But overall, most testers have expressed their appreciation of the addition of music facts that are woven for their streaming experience.
Where users complained that Spotify Ai DJ was invasive, the opposite of YouTube Music’s AI host is said. Instead, some have credited it for its natural interjections and non -intrusive comment. The votes themselves have also been praised, but several seem to be for the female host rather than the male host.
YouTube Music’s response to Spotify’s AI DJ is far from perfect and is still a beta experiment. But with a few adjustments here and there it could come on the surface as one of the best features of the music streamer. Based on the early reactions of test users, there is hope of the service’s bet into AI-based experiences-for as long as YouTube is listening to this user feedback.
Space for improvement
Although YouTube Music’s new feature has largely gone down well, it is not the biggest feature that users have asked for.
In addition to other basic features, such as searching in playback lists and volume normalization, some have noticed that YouTube has not yet introduced a ‘Liked Songs’ library, a simple feature on other major platforms.
Not only does YouTube music seem to ignore the small requests from users, it seems that its AI DJ -competitor cannot be deactivated permanently -at least for now.
In between these common frustrations, there is still a surprising wave of support for YouTube Music’s AI host, especially its comment, so hopefully a refined version will eventually get a wider rollout.
