- She said the company offered data about US citizens to the Chinese Communist Party in exchange for being allowed to operate in the country
- Facebook refused all claims
A former Meta director recently spoke ahead of the US Congress and accused Facebook and its CEO of allegedly offering sensitive data about US citizens to the Chinese government in exchange for being allowed to operate in the country.
As reported by RegisteredSarah Wynn-Williams, former director of public politics at Facebook, spoke in front of the Senate Court Committee’s Crime and Terrorism Sub-Committee earlier this week.
During the hearing, she claimed that for her former employer there was “no bridge too far” to enter the Chinese market and that it would do anything to access 1.4 billion people who lived there, including offering data on Americans to the Chinese Communist Party.
AI and censorship
“The only reason China does not currently have access to US user data through this pipeline is because Congress entered,” she was quoted and said.
Facebook threw his testimony and called it “Divorced from reality and filled with false claims,” Registered Said with reference to meta -spokesman Ryan Daniels.
“While Mark Zuckerberg himself was public about our interest in offering our services in China, and details were reported to a large extent starting over a decade ago, is the fact: We do not run our services in China today,” the spokesman added.
Wynn-Williams didn’t stop there either. She also claimed that Meta contributed to China’s progress in artificial intelligence as its Llama AI models were “openly available” in the country. There were even mentions of military uses of AI. Finally, she also claimed that Meta was working with the Chinese Communist Party to develop censorship tools and then lied about it in public.
Some senators praised Wynn-Williams’ testimony, and the fact that they submitted the alert complaints to SEC and the US Ministry of Justice after leaving the social media business. They commented that Facebook was afraid that the truth came out and that they would not stop by nothing to prevent Wynn-Williams witnessing.
