Meta’s next gene-smart glasses may not be as expensive as originally feared as new rumors point out that they cost $ 800 instead of starting over $ 1,000.
According to details shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman on social media, saying, “Meta’s first smart glasses with a display coming in September will now be priced from $ 800,” adds that this price change comes from the fact that Meta is open to accepting lower margins to increase early demand.
While rumors must always be taken with a pinch of salt, Gurman’s Insider Info is often reliable and this would fit Meta’s usual strategy. Just look at its Meta Quest 2 and Ray-Ban Meta Meta Meta Meta Meta Meta Meta Meta, both of which sold as Hotcakes.
It is interesting to note that the $ 800 is also only the rumored starting point. Like Ray-Ban and Oakley Smart Specs we already have, Meta is expected to charge more for different styles and prescription lenses.
Hopefully this does not mean transitional lenses cost too much more.
I love my Ray-Ban Smart Specs, but only since I got a couple of transitional lenses that can switch between shaded and clear as it lets me use them indoors and outside, regardless of the weather. My very shady couple was good, but nowhere near versatile.
We will have to wait and see what Meta is announcing at Connect in just under a month to find out what its plans are and also what it will charge outside the United States. While exchange rates would stick the glasses to somewhere around £ 590 / AU $ 1,230, Meta does not directly follow these rates in its price conversion. As we have seen with its previous technique, its British and Australian releases typically cost more than their equivalent with the American award.
But a lower price than previously expected would be great news. Not only to make the technique more accessible, but also to feel more worthwhile, as while I am sure a screen will be useful, I am not yet convinced that it would be enough of a game election to justify such a big price increase.
