- 71% of US citizens believe that AI can cause permanent job loss
- Only one in three think AI is useful in education
- Unemployment is largely unchanged
A new one Pakinomist/IPSOS survey has found almost half (47%) of Americans believe AI is bad for humanity, and in terms of more than just jobs.
The survey added how nearly three out of four (71%) Americans are concerned about AI will cause permanent job loss, with many divided on AI’s role into education (only 36% believe it will help).
In addition to jobs, US citizens are concerned about AIS broader consequences in society, including political chaos, military use and even a risk to humanity.
US citizens are not so sure of AI’s future
Even more citizens are concerned that AI is interfering with political systems (77%) via Deepfakes and other error information campaigns, with about half (48%) against military use of AI to decide strike goals.
Although workers and consumers largely recognize AIS productivity benefits, they are mostly concerned about abusing artificial intelligence, with harmful uses such as false medical information, racist content and AI bots, all quoted in the study.
Users are also becoming more and more aware of AI’s sustainability impacts, with three out of five (61%) concerned about high electricity demand from AI data centers.
Despite noticing a 12% decrease in data center emissions in its latest sustainability report, Google warned of an increase of 27% in the energy demand as a result of intensive calculation needs – and other companies in this room are all facing similar challenges.
Concerns span all areas of AI, but with workers who still share early concerns that AI could replace jobs, industries are not yet to prove this theory.
Technical sector dismissal has cost hundreds of thousands of jobs since the launch of chatgpt and subsequent AI tools, but with US unemployment rate that remains rather stable (4.2% in July 2025), what we see more than widespread job losses is a shift in jobs – as some become superfluous, new roles open up.
