Islamabad:
The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Economic Affairs has proposed to remove Lyari-elevated shipping corridor project from the public-private partnership (PPP) mode and including it in the public sector development program (PSDP).
On Friday, officials from the National Highway Authority (NHA) announced the committee that the project should initially be completed at a price of RS68 billion, but delays have led to cost -withdrawal.
They said Lyari Expressway is running along both sides of the Lyari River, and the plan was to divert heavy traffic from the highway to this corridor. The purpose of the corridor was to provide a separate path to heavy traffic.
A committee member, Javed Hanif Khan, asked if Lyari -highlighted the shipping corridor project had been dropped.
He asked why projects for Karachi and Sindh always went under the PPP state. He said heavy traffic enters Karachi even during the day, which is why this project was initiated.
“It was only a corridor project of 15-16 km, but it has been dropped. NHA officials said they had heard the Sindh government, but the project had not been dropped in the proposed way.
The committee proposed to change the project from PPP mode to PSDP and also instructed a position document on the project to be submitted by August 26.
