- Another three MacBooks are now considered outdated
- 2015’s 11-inch MacBook Air and 2017’s MacBook Pros (13-inch and 15-inch)
- Apple is not repairing outdated tech, though it can still replace the battery
Apple has just declared that three of its MacBooks are now outdated – a term that it praises for its technique once after it turned seven years old (starting from when the technology was available to buy, not when you specifically bought it).
These recently designated MacBooks are 2015’s 11-inch MacBook Air as well as 2017’s MacBook Pros (13-inch and 15-inch).
This is hardly a surprise that I reported a few years ago when these laptops were declared “vintage” by Apple – the first step towards becoming obsolete.
But this message serves as a reminder that it is time to retire that decade (or close to a decade) machine and replace it with something new. If you are looking for tips for what to pick up next, check out our guides for the best MacBooks and Macs or the best laptops (if you’re not so married to Apple).
As Apple’s own site explains that it will not service hardware to outdated gadgets, and service providers will no longer be able to order parts for them.
This means that when your outdated Apple product breaks down, it is broken too well unless you can save part from another machine – or are lucky enough to find a workshop with a supply of old parts.
For MacBooks, the only exception that Apple sometimes offers an expanded repair system that is only battery for up to 10 years (based on partial availability). So there is a chance that you may be able to keep your old laptop chugging with a little longer, but not counting on it, as you may be out of luck if Apple’s battery supply is driven dry.
Although we hope that you may have upgraded your technique a little before than this term, which is awarded, which none of these MacBooks has supported the latest macOS release in a few bikes. This means that your aging laptop can be at a higher security risk.
In addition, you will also miss everything the latest generation of MacOS Tahoe 26 has to offer – including the snazzy new ‘liquid glass’ look.
