Four companies on the list of PIA -Privatization

A Senate Panel was told on Monday that four out of five companies that gave statements about qualification (SOQS) for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) have been declared justified.

Secretary of privatization informed the senate’s standing committee that the site’s visits and conferences were underway, after which the bid phase begins.

During the committee meeting, chairman of the Senator Afnanullah on Monday, the privatization of Pia, Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC) and power production companies (GenCOS) and distribution companies (Discos) were under discussion.

Members of the committee proposed to remove PMDC from the Privatisa Tion list, while the committee also called on the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) officials to discuss the privatization of discos.

Briefing of the committee said the joint secretary of Power Division that eight out of nine questions in Nandipur and four out of nine at Guddu are resolved.

He added that two Genco plants remain on the privatization list and that both Disco and Gencos are currently undergoing the privatization process.

The secretary of privatization noted that institutions that make profits today do not necessarily remain profitable in the future.

“The role of the government is not to operate power plants or transport companies. After privatization, the government will earn revenue while the private sector will improve performance and improvement,” he said.

The PMDC financial official stated that the company is generated by an annual revenue of RS5.40 billion and produces 1.5 million tonnes of salt annually.

At Pia, the secretary of privatization repeated that five companies had submitted SOQs, four of which were declared justified.
