- Instagram for iPad is available now
- It arrives 15 years after the original iPhone -App -launch
- The app contains a new subsequent tab
It has been one of the weirdest deviations in technology for several years, the lack of an official Instagram app for iPad, but Meta’s engineers have finally found time to correct this wrong: Instagram to iPad is available now.
If you own one of Apple’s tablets, you can now settle back and enjoy Instagram -Feeds, Stories and Wheels on a larger screen. Rolls will be what appears first because Instagram expects these to be perfect for lean-back entertainment (and also because … Tiktok).
“People have been asking for this for a while,” says the message blog with a straight face. “We’ve taken the time to design an experience that optimizes your favorite parts on Instagram for a bigger screen.”
Instagram for iOS debuted in October 2010, and requests for an iPad app started almost instantly. While apps gradually appeared for Android, the Internet and even Windows Mobile over the years, demands for an iPad app politely weakened away.
A new following tab
You will get a complete package of features for creating new content in the iPad app, just as you do on the iPhone equivalent. You can also access your Instagram inbox (with the conversation list and the chat itself side by side) and your activity and message feed.
There is a new screen here, called the following. It has three tabs: Everyone (posts from accounts you follow), friends (posts from people you follow and who follow you back) and the latest (posts from accounts you follow, in chronological order).
It will be interesting to see if this tab goes into Instagram’s other apps: According to the message, it was introduced in response to “Requests of easier ways to make sure you are not missing updates from your favorite accounts”.
Based on a quick look at the app, it seems to be doing a decent job of using the extra screen room. You need to find the Instagram app for iPad available now in the Apple App Store, and it can be downloaded free of charge to any tablet running iPados 15.1 or newer.
