Los Angeles:
When Adam Scott filmed Resignation For Apple TV+ AAPL.O, he and co -herd members were unsure how viewers would respond to a streaming series built around Brain Chips, a room full of goats and waffle parties.
The psychological thriller, the most nominated show at Sunday’s Emmy Awards, tells the story of office workers undergoing an operation that makes them forget about their home life at work, and vice versa.
“We all felt that it was weird and maybe too weird,” said Scott, Parks and recreation Actor, who plays a history professor, turned manager within the sterile offices for the fictional Lumon Industries.
The voters of Emmys, the highest honor on television, have embraced the mind-bending story. Resignation Bought 27 Emmy nominations and won six trophies at an Emmys ceremony last week at technical prices.
The Sci-Fi series is in the process of several Emmys on Sunday including the top prize with best drama. Competitors include Star Wars series AndorEmergency Room Speech Pitt and murder mystery The white lotus. Winners will be announced by a red-blanket ceremony that is TV broadcast live at CBS Para.o.
Scott was nominated for best drama actor and Resignation Co -star Britt Lower for best drama actor. Seven other severance stars received supportive or guest actors nod.
Many of Resignation Actors play two characters -an “Innie” version working on Lumon performing boring tasks and an “outie” variation that lives in the outside world.
Among the show’s unusual touch points include the Lumon building a space where carers raise goats of goats. An employee is rewarded for good work with a waffle party that provides an opportunity for sexual experiences.
What does all this add up to?
Resignation Offers a philosophical takeover of balance between working life and the power and companies while “stabbing a stick on it with an absurdly light,” said Chris Rice, Co-Ceo for the fifth season, the production company behind the show.
Supporting actor -nominated John Turturro, who plays Loyal Lumon -employee Irving, said the show “asks questions without giving all the answers.”
“I think people really find it participating,” he added. Plus, “People have to navigate working life and personal life, and it’s an eternal conundrum that people go through.”
Big questions
Resignation Debuted in 2022 for critical recognition and gained traction with viewers when season two was released in January 2025. The show landed in Nielsen’s top 10 list of the most streamed shows.
Stars in the series said they thought it was more than job dissatisfaction that drew people to Resignation. They quoted loneliness in today’s society as people are glued to technology rather than seeking human connection.
“There is some alienation that we all feel apart these days,” Scott said.
Zach Cherry, a supportive actor nominated who plays reliable office worker Dylan said Resignation causes people to turn inward. “In addition to the characters that connect each other,” said Cherry, “it’s also about the characters who learn to connect to all the different parts of themselves that I think is also something that everyone has to do with.”
Lower, who plays the stubborn Helly, said the show has served fans among high school students and college students who have not yet entered the workforce. She thinks the series causes people to ask deep questions such as “What makes us people?”
“For me, it’s kind of the most exciting part,” Lower said. “Are the inn human? Are the full people? And what do them do that?”
