Apple’s new Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max did not come as a complete surprise at Tuesday’s AWE dropping event; Many leaks suggested in premium color on the left. Still, the vibrant tint marks a real departure from the more muted finishes from previous iPhone Pro-Line-Up handset.
In a conversation with the Apple Global Marketing Head Greg Joswiak and the company’s senior VP for hardware -Ingreensora John Ternus (along with Tom’s Global Editor in Chief Mark Spoonauer) noted the pair of managers that the new colors are partly a direct product of the titanium contact on the last set of iPhone Pro and Pro Max phones to Anodized Aluminum.

It is a lighter, more energy efficient material that, through anodizing, happens to support a wider color range.
“For years we’ve had pro -customers to say, ‘Hello, the other part of the line gets all the fun colors, and we don’t,'” Joswiak explained, “and it’s like, ‘Okay, you want a fun color, what about cosmic orange, baby’.”
This makes some sense, as I have also heard some Apple consumers complain that the pro -line volue choices are boring. Orange is definitely unbibrared. On the other hand, many have noticed the loss of an iconic pro color that on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max appears to have replaced: black or space black or room black. I asked Joswiak and Ternus, “When did orange the new black?”
“We’ve had different shades of darkness for years. We know people want a dark,” Joswiak told me, “We turned deeply blue. It’s beautiful.”
Joswiak added that he thinks shade is “amazing.” He reminded me that classic silver is still an option. “We think we’ve got the bases covered there, and we really have a good time with it.”
While Ternus and Joswiak would not go into details of color choices, Joswiak remembered their reaction when Apple’s “best design people on the planet” first revealed the new colors. “They showed us these, and we’re like, yes, it’s great.”
And yes, Ternus carries an iPhone 17 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange. It looks like Pumpkin Spice has some fresh autumn orange competition.
