Appeals filed to the UN on behalf of Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi

Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have submitted formal appeals to the United Nations Special Report on Torture of their alleged arbitrary detention and inhuman treatment, PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari said.

By going to X on Friday, Bukhari revealed that two appeals had formally been filed on behalf of the imprisoned PTI chief and his spouse. He added that the appeals were put forward with the help of Human Rights Law Firm Perseus strategies.

“I am pleased to announce that two formal appeals have been submitted to the UN’s special rapporteur on torture, @dralicejedwards, on behalf of former Prime Minister @imrankhanpti and his wife, Bushra Bibi,” Bukhari wrote at X.

Bukhari noted that the appeal to Khan was presented by his sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, while Bushra Bibi’s sister, Maryam Wattoo, filed the submission on her behalf. He also claimed that the pair’s ongoing detention is politically motivated and aimed at undermining the decisibility of the previous Premier.

“We will never stop raising our votes on any platform against their arbitrary detention and inhuman treatment. For the first time in Pakistan’s history, the wife of a political prisoner is also imprisoned, solely for breaking his determination,” BUKHARI claimed.

He also thanked Jared Gense and Jacob Bogart from Perseus strategies for their “priceless support” in the preparation of the legal documentation submitted to the UN body.

The development comes in the midst of ongoing legal battles involving the former prime minister and his wife, both of whom have been convicted in several cases in the past year, including Toshakhana and IDDAT cases. PTI and its supporters have repeatedly termed the conviction as politically motivated.

The UN special rapporteur on torture is an independent expert appointed by the UN Human Rights Council to investigate and report on issues related to torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment throughout the world.

Separately, Kasim wrote: “My father, Imran Khan, is in prison because he rose to democracy. He is held in lonely inclusion, refused access to his doctors and is limited from meeting his lawyers and family. At the same time, members of his family and thousands of his followers have been reduced or drawn before military dishes.”

He called the imprisonment of his father as political revenge and said, “This is not justice – it is political revenge. Pakistan’s democracy is at stake, and I urge everyone who believes in human rights and democracy to stand with us so that people’s voice is heard and the rule of law is restored.”
