- China’s Ant Group warns of fake promises around Open Sourced AI
- Nvidia, Openai and Google are criticized for their false efforts
- Open-Sourcing AI models could be China’s success
Chinese fintech giant and alipay operator Ant Group has accused US tech giants (such as Openai, Nvidia and Google) of using open source tools to lock developers into their closed source AI ecosystems.
For example, Nvidia’s Dynamo (Open Sourced in March 2024) is marketed as the operating system for AI, but it is specifically optimized for NVIDIA GPUs.
Ant Group also accused Openai and Google of releasing Open Source AI agent frames, but they are specifically designed for their proprietary models.
Open Source AI is actually not open source
As an industry-leading tool for high flow, multi-model implementation, Dynamo will further encourage companies to select NVIDIA hardware to maximize benefit gains, ”noted the report (via SCMP).
Myr contrasted American practice with Chinese companies-Alibaba Cloud and Bytedance has Open Sourced their models and lets developers download and build on them. This has not only led to widespread adoption of Chinese models, but their adoption of American startups.
The group also raised concerns about the market share, where Microsoft retained a 39% market share in Foundation models and model management platforms, and Nvidia boasts a huge 92% share of the Data Center GPU market.
The report also found that more than half of the global open source AI-ecosystem contribution comes from the United States (37.4%) and China (18.7%).
Open Source AI models allow researchers to study how they work, improve confidence and accountability, but it also allows Startups to experiment cheaper. However, they can also be abused for harmful purposes and still require access to expensive GPUs.
While many US companies tend to keep their models closed source and open source tools around them, such as tool chains and frames, China Open Sourcing sees its models as a way of challenging us dominance.
